Lee grounding was that done by the ship&#8217;s wireless operator, Maurice D. Holland.<\/p>\n<p>Holland&#8217;s nimble fingers dashed off distress signals that were quickly relayed to the Coast Guard as the ship was taking on water and its generators and engines swamped.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Early radio signals from the Lee indicated that the steamer was in grave danger of breaking up on the rocks,&#8221; an Associated Press story in the next day&#8217;s Chicago Tribune said. &#8220;The wireless operator hardly could keep his hands on his radio key because of the heavy pounding and it was impossible to launch the ship&#8217;s life boats because of the heavy seas.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Holland a month later was honored with a distinguished service award by the Antique Wireless Association (see above). Lee<br \/>\nwas told piecemeal tonight in a series<br \/>\nof wireless messages from the stricken<br \/>\nship.<\/p>\n<p>The first message was sent a few<br \/>\nminutes before 8 o&#8217;clock and read:<br \/>\n&#8220;On Boston end of Cape Cod Canal.<br \/>\nTrying to get off ourselves. Our lights<br \/>\ngone. Running on batteries.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>At 8 o&#8217;clock the vessel sent out an<br \/>\nS O S and the following message:<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;On Mary Ann rock hard and fast.<br \/>\nUnable to keep free of water. Send<br \/>\nboats. One hundred and fifty passen-<br \/>\ngers. Pounding badly.&#8221;<\/p>\n<div style=\"text-align: center;\"><strong>Rescuers Are Warned<\/strong><\/div>\n<p>At 8:10 the Coast Guard cutter Tus-<br \/>\ncarora notified the Robert E. Lee by<br \/>\nradio that she was proceeding to her<br \/>\nassistance. At 8:44 the Lee sent this<br \/>\nmessage:<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Six feet of water in the engine<br \/>\nroom. Using gas engines. Running<br \/>\nradio on batteries. Power is running<br \/>\noff.&#8221;<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<p><strong>Below is The Chicago Tribune story noted above.
